If you've got games on your PC like 3D shooters and other graphics-intensive programs, those games may be slow, and not particularly realistic and vivid because of an old video card. You know it is time for a new video card. A new card will do wonders for your gaming experience - it'll give your games a whole new lease on life and offer knock-em-dead, stunning graphics, and lightning-fast speed. The two main things you're looking for when you buy a video card are great graphics and speed. So first of all, make sure that the card will be able to display your game at the resolutions you need - and at resolutions you might need in the future if you buy a new, larger monitor. Next, find out how much memory it has. Under no circumstances should you settle for under 128MB. Make sure the memory is DDR ,also called DDR-SDRAM or DDRRAM - that's the fastest memory now, and what you should get. Just about any good card you buy these days will have at least 128MB of DDR. If you want to go up to 256MB, you'll need to pay a premium.
Check out the card's maximum refresh rate at its maximum resolution. You want to make sure that it matches the capabilities of your monitor. As a general rule, a higher maximum refresh rate is better, but the key is that your monitor can display at the proper refresh rate. It needs to be an AGP card rather than a PCI, unless you have an ancient PC without an AGP slot. The AGP standard is far faster and more efficient than PCI. Look for an 8X AGP card - that's the current speediest spec. For maximum visual clarity, you want lots of colors. Don't settle for anything less than 16.7 Million Colors.
