Ring tailed Lemur-Lemur catta

Labels:

The ring tailed lemur is a member of the lemur family (Lemuridae) and is found naturally in Madagascar. The most striking characteristic of this prosimian is its very long, black and white ringed tail, which is generally longer than its body. Their long tails are use for communication with each other and balance when leaping between trees. They have opposable thumbs and long toes adapted for gripping tree branches. Lemurs have nails rather than claws on all digits except the second toe of each hind foot, which has a "toilet claw" for grooming.

The ring tailed lemur is diurnal (active during day time and rest at night) and prefers to bask in the sun in a very unusual sitting position. In the mornings, Ring-tailed Lemurs ritually sunbathe to warm themselves. They face the sun, sitting in what is frequently described as a "sun-worshiping" posture or Lotus position. However, they sit with their legs extended outward, not cross-legged, and will often support themselves on nearby branches. Sunning is often a group activity. Its diet consists mainly of a variety of fruit, such as fig thistles, but it may also eat leaves. They are gregarious animals. They live in groups averaging between 15 and 22 animals in a territory which no ring tailed lemurs from other groups are tolerated, except may be very young animals.

Lemur species live in groups have a matriarchal society (i.e. females are dominant over males). The females gives birth to an average of 1 to 2 infants with full hair per year. When born, the young have their blue eyes fully open and look exactly like adults. The mother breastfeed the young for several months but, after time, the young start to venture out more often in search of food. The young animal can fend for itself when it is 6 months and reaches sexual maturity a year later. A ring tailed lemur can grow to a length of 3 feet, including its tail.
